Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 for sledders (AST1)

Schedule for 2023/2024 and where courses take place (unless otherwise identified):

  • Dec 16-17, 2023. Prince George (classroom) and Wells/Barkerville (field day)
  • Jan 20-21, 2024. Quesnel (classroom) and Wells/Barkerville (field day)
  • Feb 6/8 and 10, 2024. Prince George (classroom Feb 6/8) and Wells/Barkerville (field day)

 

Duration: 2 days (1 day of 8 hours classroom, and 1 day in the mountains, accessed by sleds). The class will be hosted in Prince George and Wells/Barkerville area unless otherwise identified.

By the end of this introductory course, you will understand how to:

  • Evaluate the basics of avalanche formation and release
  • Identify avalanche terrain
  • Know the steps required to plan and carry out a trip
  • Use appropriate decision-making tools
  • Find resources for obtaining terrain ratings if a trip is not rated
  • Find resources for obtaining Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins if these are not available
  • Carry out a companion rescue
  • Understand the limits of your training.

Participants must have a sled, helmet, and basic avy gear (shovel, probe, and digital transceiver).  We can rent you avalanche gear if let us know in advance.
Participants under the age of 19 must register with a parent that will accompany them as a full participant.

Pricing: $400+GST.

Offered for recreational users, or modified for occupational courses.
