Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 for skiers (AST1)

Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 for skiers (AST1)

Duration: 2 days (1 day or 8 hours classroom, and 1 day in the mountains, accessed by touring skis/skins). The class will be hosted in Prince George and Pine Pass area unless otherwise identified.

By the end of this introductory course, you will understand how to:

  • Evaluate the basics of avalanche formation and release
  • Identify avalanche terrain
  • Know the steps required to plan and carry out a trip
  • Use appropriate decision-making tools
  • Find resources for obtaining terrain ratings if a trip is not rated
  • Find resources for obtaining Avalanche Danger Ratings and Avalanche Bulletins if these are not available
  • Carry out a companion rescue
  • Understand the limits of your training.

Participants must have backcountry touring skis and skins and basic avy gear (shovel, probe, and digital transceiver).  We can rent you avalanche gear if let us know in advance.
Participants under the age of 19 must register with a parent that will accompany them as a full participant.

Pricing: $340+GST.

It is also possible that participants will be responsible for purchasing a one-up pass at Powder King, which has previously cost approximately $30.  A one-up pass allows instructors and participants to quickly gain access to suitable terrain for training, without losing an hour or two skinning up the mountain - which means more time learning and practicing avalanche skills!
