For those fishing, boating, hunting, working, or recreating near rivers and other moving water environments, these courses focus on hazard awareness and avoidance, safe wading, self-rescue, helping a friend or coworker, and specialized safety equipment. A must to make sure you go home after a day on the river!
These courses vary from 1 to 4 day durations, and are offered in North and Central British Columbia by OVERhang on behalf of Rescue Canada, with certification by the I.R.I.A.
Register well in advance to guarantee your spot, and provide your sizing info if you need to rent a drysuit, PFD, helmet, boots, or gloves!
SSRT2
- Most people take the Swiftwater Safety/Rescue Technician II (SSRT2) course if they are working or playing in or near low-risk river environments (class 1 or 2 rivers). This includes Level 1 training plus Safety, Self Rescue, and Companion Rescue, and is the industry standard for Occupational workers and Resource Management and the start for many Emergency Responders.
This course is designed to give the student the practical knowledge and skills to operate safely in a low-risk and shore-based environment.
- Basic safety and self-rescue, entrapments, swimming, wading, and the simple systems are all performed in this course.
- Registration is $515 plus GST.
- PPE rental (drysuit, helmet, gloves, boots, PFD with knife/tether/whistle, and throwbag on a deployment belt) is $200 plus GST if you don't have your own setup.
SSRT3
- People working in higher risk environments, or engaged in professional rescue (fire fighters, search & rescue, Parks, Conservation Officers, etc) usually take the SSRT3 course.
- The first two days are consistent with the SSRT2 course, plus more Subject Rescue, Rescue Swimming and Rescue Systems.
- If you need to perform in-water rescues or work in medium- to high-risk environments, then this is your course.
Working from simple to complex systems and focusing on third-party rescues are all performed beyond the skills previously taught in the other courses. Swimming in Class 2-3 whitewater, contact rescues, and scenarios are the focus of this training course.
- Registration is $615 plus GST.
- PPE rental (drysuit, helmet, gloves, boots, PFD with knife/tether/whistle, and throwbag on a deployment belt) is $225 plus GST if you don't have your own setup.
All swiftwater courses include Rescue Canada's online e-learning component in advance, which takes most people 3-4 hours.
